To build a winning team, you need two essential ingredients. Number one is a common goal, and number two is the ability to communicate that goal. A group of people is not a team just because they wear the same uniform. Unity of purpose, not uniformity, is the key to successful teamwork. You can have a team full of talent, but there will not be teamwork if every team member does not share the goals of the team.
Winning Teams Play to Win
A winning team is a team that plays to win. Attitude alone often is the difference between winning and losing. Playing to lose is not a winning strategy. The difference between playing to win and to play not to lose is often the difference between a successful team and a mediocre team.
Winning Teams Take Risks
Winning teams are teams that are not afraid to take risks. It is far better to try and fail, than to fail to try.
Winning Teams Keep Improving
Winning teams always continue to try harder even when they have reached the top. It is not easy to stay on top. Teams who reach the top tend to try and maintain their position and hang on to the glory. This is a big mistake as there is always someone below hungry enough for victory and willing to make the necessary sacrifices. It is often easier to win when you have nothing to lose.
Your team must be taught that the highest reward for improvement is not what you get for it, but what you become as a result of it.
Team Members in a Winning Team Care for Each Other
Winning teams consist of team members who care for each other. They support each other and are constantly looking for ways to enhance each other.
Inspiring Your Team to Success
The essence of leadership is to inspire others to work as a team towards a common objective. The leader of a team inspires the team members by exemplifying a positive and hopeful attitude. They motivate the team by reminding them of the overall vision and importance of accomplishing the goal. When leaders communicate clear expectations, they give the team members the freedom to be creative. Leaders express inspiration when they believe in their team. A winning team knows that their leader has total confidence in them.
